Solar Thermal

Solar thermal heating systems use energy from the sun to provide the property with hot water. A conventional boiler or immersion heater is then used to make the water hotter, or to provide hot water when solar energy is unavailable.

If you have a solar thermal system installed before July 2012 you will be eligible for the RHI Premium Payment of £300 then from July 2012 you will be able to claim the Renewable Heat Incentive which equates to, 8.5p per Kw of heat produced.

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) use pipes buried in the garden to extract heat from the ground, A long loop of pipe, filled with water and anti-freeze, is buried in the earth. The liquid in the pipe (or ground loop) absorbs heat from the ground which is a fairly stable 8°C - 12°C all year round. As it passes through an electrically powered heat pump, the absorbed heat is extracted and used around your property.

Air source heat pumps

Air source heat pumps (ASHP) work in a similar way to the ground source heat pumps, but instead of extracting heat from the ground, they extract heat from the air outside your home, using an evaporator coil. This looks like the big fans on air conditioner units and is fixed on an outside wall of the building. This is then used to heat radiators, under floor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home.
